What to see in Bilbao and the Basque Country by car
Bilbao has reinvented itself thanks to the Guggenheim Museum, a masterpiece by Frank Gehry that transformed a former industrial city into a cultural capital. The Casco Viejo (historic center) with its «siete calles» and the Mercado de la Ribera, the largest covered market in Europe, complete the center.
Pintxos (the Basque version of tapas) are a unique gastronomic experience: the Ledesma district and the Casco Viejo are the best places for a «txikiteo» (round of pintxos and wine). The Basque Country has the highest concentration of Michelin stars per inhabitant in the world.
By car you reach San Sebastian in an hour: the Playa de la Concha is considered the most beautiful urban beach in Europe. Guernica, the symbolic city immortalized by Picasso, is 30 minutes away. The Basque coast between Bilbao and San Sebastian offers fishing villages (Bermeo, Mundaka, Lekeitio) and perfect waves for surfing.

Driving in the Basque Country: practical tips
The Basque Country has excellent roads and a green hilly landscape reminiscent of Ireland. The AP-8 motorway connects Bilbao to San Sebastian in an hour (toll about 10 euros) and continues towards France. The free A-8 offers a more scenic alternative route along the coast.
The Basque climate is very different from the rest of Spain: frequent rains, mild temperatures (15-25 degrees in summer) and coastal fog. Always bring a raincoat and drive carefully on wet roads. In return, the lush green and the coastal panoramas are spectacular.
Parking in the center of Bilbao is managed with parking meters (zona azul) and underground car parks. Signage is often bilingual (Spanish and Basque/euskera): don't be surprised by names like «Bilbo» for Bilbao or «Donostia» for San Sebastian.
